If your jobs are a driveway, path, patio, deck, garage floor, workbench or a car after washing, an electric blower is the easier tool: it starts on the trigger, produces no exhaust, needs almost no maintenance and stores on a shelf. If your job is clearing an acre of soaked leaves or running for hours at a time, choose a high-output gas or backpack model with published airflow figures instead.

What you stop dealing with

The honest limitations of electric

Electric is not automatically the better tool, and pretending otherwise would not help you choose:

  • Runtime is finite. When the charge is gone, the job pauses until the battery recharges.
  • Peak output on small handhelds is generally lower than on a full-size gas machine.
  • Battery capacity drops over years of charge cycles, and in freezing weather.
  • Corded models remove the runtime problem but tether you to an outlet.

Battery versus corded in practice

Because there is no combustion, an electric blower can be used in a garage, workshop or carport where a gas engine would be unsafe. That does not make it risk-free: wear eye protection, keep the intake clear of loose clothing and hair, avoid hazardous dust such as ash or anything containing asbestos, keep ventilation open, and disconnect power from electronics before blowing dust out of them.

Cold weather and storage

Lithium batteries lose some usable capacity in freezing conditions, so bring the pack indoors between winter uses and let it reach room temperature before charging. For long storage, leave it at partial charge in a dry room rather than an unheated shed, and top it up every few months. That is effectively the whole off-season routine.
